When you start off entering a tracking trial, here are few tips. Fill in your entry form stating a Qualification Test not forgetting to nominate your known tracklayer on the entry form.
When entering tests 1 send a copy of your Qualifying test and nominate your known tracklayer, and as you progress through the tests you will have to nominate your known crossover once you are up to test 4.
Always telephone the trial secretary of your next trial, the night you have passed a test, to upgrade your test. Sometimes it may not be possible to change; get in first and you could be successful.
If you have had a pass under one of the judges at a previous trial towards your TD do not forget to put this on your entry form, as you will need to be under a different judge for your next pass. The same goes for your TDX if you have had two passes under one of the judges in previous trials put this on your entry form. (the trial secretary's are not mindreaders!!)
Remember to send a business size stamped self addressed envelope so the trial secretary can send you all the details of where to go and what day you will be on.
At the end of your track, pass or fail, please do not forget to thank your tracklayer, without these people you would not have the opportunity to gain a pass. Please do not overload the tracklayer with a large enclosed container of food for your dog, a small one that will fit into a coat pocket is quite big enough, your dog can have the rest of the meal when you get back to the car. Also, along with your dog's reward, it is a nice gesture to leave something for your tracklayer e.g. small chocolate bar, as a thank you.
As you set off for the tracking trials, don't forget your dog's harness, lead and your known tracklayer or crossover, and bring some articles in case you are asked to lay a track. Unlike obedience trials, tracking trials do not have many people around, so please stay until after presentations, to help celebrate the passes. I'm sure you would like everyone to celebrate yours!!!!!
Don't forget to call the trial secretary if you cannot make the trial, the night before would be a good time, if not home phone then call the mobile number.
